Rajan (Ray) Koshy's Rice Straw MuseumRice Straw Museum is dedicated to save an ancient (about 2000 year old art form) and endangered art from extinction and to introduce the art to America and the world. Straw art is an ancient art form that began before people had developed paint or dyes or had any knowledge of color application. This art consists of using the natural colors of the leaves of the rice plant to form a straw collage with intricate details and highlights. Different colored straw (dried leaves of the
rice plant) is selected and sorted out and each individual piece is glued
together by hand. No color, paint or dye is added to the natural color of
the straw. The art involves carefully sorting and selecting narrow strips of
rice straw and gluing them to a cloth base to form a collage. The natural
colors of the rice plant are used in This beautiful art originated in a small town in Kerala, the southern tip of India, centuries ago and is in danger of being extinct, since fewer than 100 artists around the world practice this ancient, endangered art. Even though straw art has been in existence for thousands of years, very few people in the world today know about this beautiful art form. Unless the world discovers the beauty, uniqueness and the history of straw art, it will end up in the pages of history. Support the efforts to save this great heritage for future generations as it becomes a part of American art. Visit the Rice Straw Museum on the web and discover the beauty of this ancient and endangered art form. |

This unique art originated in a small town on the southern tip of India centuries ago. Ray is from that area and grew up with the knowledge of and respect for straw art. However it was four years ago that he decided to learn the art himself. I had great appreciation for this art and wanted to learn how to do it. I found out there are only a handful of people in the world who are carrying on this art form and that is why I really wanted to learn about it... |

"I work with dried leaves of the
rice plant. It is an ancient form of art/craft practiced by less than 100
people around the globe at present. I learned this unique form of leaf
art/craft from my teacher in Kerala, the southern tip of India. I stayed
with them for many weeks and learned this ancient art. Now I practice this
unique art in Galveston, Texas and attempt to promote this beautiful art to
America and the western world. I make birds, tall ships, dogs, cats,
portraits of movie stars etc. " Rajan (Ray) Koshy, Rice Straw Museum, 1214 Church St, Galveston, Texas 77550
